Having grown up as an only child, the sibling relationship is something that I have always admired and desperately wanted.   From my point of view, a sibling is a built-in friend who is there to share your deepest secrets, help you with difficult decisions and rocky relationships, and serve as your guide in learning right from wrong.  A sibling is a constant in your life and the one person who understands the depth of your love for your parents and who will understand the depth of your grief when your parents pass away.  A sibling is your person.  A sibling gets you.  Having a sibling makes you a part of a tribe.

Perhaps it goes along with being part of a tribe or the hope to create an identity for their unit that inspires parents to dress their children alike.  Maybe coordinated clothing simply began as a way to create a nice family photo.  Whatever the case, I always love seeing siblings dressed in coordinating outfits and I LOVE that Megan, the owner and designer of Shrimp and Grits Kids, is focused on creating sibling sets each season.  I recently asked Megan to share her creative process when developing coordinating sets for siblings in her line.  This is what she had to say:

“I always try to design sets that incorporate a girl and a boy coordinating design.  I also like to add an older girl and an older boy option in several styles per season. I know so many mamas like to coordinate the whole family and I try to give them several options.”

Some Shrimp and Grits Kids customers prefer to dress their children exactly the same while others prefer pieces that complement one another.  As family photo sessions, and especially sibling photo sessions, become more and more popular, we continue to see an increase in purchases of sibling sets each season.  Whether you are a parent to all girls, all boys, or some of each, Shrimp and Grits Kids is your one stop to get your little ones completely coordinated!

We adore seeing all of your family photos and how you are matching your children in Shrimp and Grits Kids.  Scroll down to check out one of our favorite sibling photos, along with a few sibling set shots from our Shrimp and Grits Spring 2016 line.

Easter Banner for Blog

Growing up, I always loved Easter.

Easter meant egg hunts, frilly dresses, big hats, church on Sunday, and family gatherings complete with ham, deviled eggs, and coconut cake! Easter was a time to celebrate newness and rebirth.  My Easter basket was always filled to the brim and always included a new stuffed bunny, a large chocolate animal, and other little surcees found in tin Easter eggs (which I recently saw listed as “vintage” on ebay! oh my!).  The sun was always shining and freshly bloomed azaleas served as the backdrop to capture beautiful family photos.

Nowadays it seems as though we spend this special holiday rushing to find just the right Easter basket items to make our presentation Pinterest worthy. We barely notice the joy on our children’s faces because we are scrambling to get out of the house.  We are determined to make it to church, but sadly are preoccupied with making sure we leave service quickly to get food in the oven before family arrives.  The freshly bloomed azaleas are forgotten and instead replaced with 100 cell phone photos with our selfie stick, trying to get the perfect one to post on Facebook!

This season, we are committing to slow down and smell the azaleas! Continue reading

What to do with Kids Clothing That No Longer Fits

It’s no secret that kids grow fast. In fact, if you’ve ever tried to re-stock a growing child’s wardrobe, you’ll quickly realize that outfits purchased a few short months ago which fit perfectly are now just a hair too short and a little too tight. What’s a parent to do? Continue reading

How to Layer Clothes During Unpredictable Fall Weather

If you’ve ever experienced Fall weather in the Southern states, you know how unpredictable it can be. 75 degrees and sunny at noon can quickly turn into 50 degrees and a light freeze by sun down. It’s frustrating and is the cause of those annoying month long sniffles, but it’s also just a fact of life. That’s why we always advocate for laying clothes to get through these unpredictable Fall and Winter days and nights. Continue reading

Kids Travel Clothes: How to Keep Your Kids Comfy on the Road or in the Air

Few things can strike fear into the hearts of parents like traveling during the holidays with a wild pack of children. Latest Girls Fashion: Serendipity Fall Fashion Preview

It’s smack dab in the middle of Fall now, and while that means lots of fun things (because Fall is one of our favorite seasons), one of the most exciting parts for us is the release of our annual Serendipity Fall line. There’s a ton to love about Serendipity – I mean, the name itself means a happy occurrence of events. Today, our line is available online and we’re excited to share some of our favorite pieces with you! But first, we want to tell you a little bit about the inspiration for this season’s Fall lineup.

Our owner and designer, Megan Hewitt, has been hard at work for the last six months finding inspiration in everything from backyard camphor trees to the beautiful bay sunsets that we get to enjoy here in Charleston. This season heavily features gray and pink together, along with accents of aqua, periwinkle, and amber yellow. The colors mix so well together, and they add so much fun and whimsy to almost any fabric that you put them on. In fact, in our Clock Work Knot Dress, you almost feel like you’re part of the Mad Hatter’s tea party in Alice in Wonderland!

Take a look at some of our favorite pieces below from the new Serendipity Fall 2015 line, and then check out the whole catalog of clothing on our website.
