Living in a city like Charleston, you learn pretty quickly to appreciate food. There’s no shortage of delicious eateries here from nationally renowned James Beard winning (that means fancy pants) restaurants to some of the best hole-in-the-wall seafood shacks this side of the Mississippi. But dining with kids isn’t means that hitting up that $100 a plate once-in-a-lifetime dinner isn’t always a possibility. Instead, you have to choose a place with a kid-friendly menu and an atmosphere that will be supportive (or at least pretend to be) if your child prefers to wear the pasta, instead of eat it.
These are our top three favorite picks for kid-friendly restaurants in Charleston. Let us know if you agree!
1. Hyman’s Seafood
Hyman’s is a Charleston institution, five generations strong. Located in downtown Charleston on Meeting Street, Hyman’s covers most of a city block in a historic brick building. Their menu ranges from fresh seafood to soup and salads to poboys. Although they’re known for their seafood, Hyman’s has a long history of being a deli. While there’s no kids menu, the menu is so large and varied that there’s definitely something that your kids will eat.
Vegetarians and carnivores alike can agree on one thing – burgers and hot dogs (whatever their filling) are delicious. Hōm is built on this idea. Also located downtown on King Street, Hōm has every kind of burger you can imagine, from beef patties to tofu burgers and Middle-eastern flared falafel burgers. Add in fries and dipping sauces, and there isn’t anything NOT to love. Added bonus? They have ping pong tables in the back.
3. Taco Boy
Taco Boy offers up just what the name would suggest: tacos, chips and salsa, and a great outdoor space that’s perfect for relaxing with the family. Located in a tucked away corner of Charleston (just off East Bay Street near the on ramp for the Cooper River Bridge), Taco Boy has an expansive indoor area, and large patio area decorated festively with Christmas lights and heating lamps (so even on chilly nights you can enjoy the outdoors), and the menu is wallet-friendly too so filling up the family won’t be an issue.
