Healthy Snacks for Kids: Baked Sweet Potato Fries

It’s not always easy to keep healthy snacks for kids around for after school, but it’s important. Give them something packed with sugar and you can expect a burst of hyperactivity and then a crash; feed them something unfilling, and it won’t be enough to hold them over during after-school activities. So what’s a parent to do? Try this healthy snack that your kids will almost certainly love.

Baked Sweet Potato Fries

What’s better (and healthier) than french fries? Sweet potato fries, that’s what. And if you choose to bake them, you’ve got an even better after-school snack.

What you need:

  • 4 sweet potatoes
  • 1 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil

What to do:

Start by preheating the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut into wedges by slicing the sweet potatoes in half lengthwise. Then cut 1″ wedges lengthwise to create thick cut fries.

Place the wedges on a baking sheet. Next, mix olive oil, chili powder, and half of the kosher salt in a small bowl. Use a pastry brush to lightly brush olive oil mixture onto potatoes.

Put the fries in the oven and bake for 25 minutes (or until interiors are soft). Once finished, take out of the oven, and sprinkle with the remainder of the sea salt. Let cool for 10-15 minutes. Serve with ketchup for a quick healthy snack option.
